What is the JMAC Foundation?

Martial arts change lives. They build confidence, discipline, resilience, friendship, and purpose. For many people, the dojo becomes a second home, and the people there become like family.

The JMAC Foundation is rooted in the same community as JMAC Ann Arbor, providing direct support to students, organizers, and scholars.

The Foundation was created to help protect and pass on life-changing experiences to future generations. Its mission is to support the practice, study, and transmission of martial arts across generations.

Monumental moments in a martial artist’s life happen outside of regular classes. A seminar with a great teacher. A trip to train somewhere new. A conversation that alters your understanding forever. A book, research project, or cultural experience that deepens your connection to the arts.

These moments can inspire people for the rest of their lives. Some people miss these opportunities because of financial hardship or lack of support. The JMAC Foundation exists to help open those doors.

Ways the Foundation Gives Back

The Foundation provides support on many levels. It may:

  • Help students travel to important training events.
  • Aid instructors and organizers with seminars and educational programs
  • Fund research, writing, translation, and preservation projects that keep martial arts knowledge alive

Every act of support helps strengthen the future of traditional martial arts and the communities built around them.

Founded on A Lifetime of Service

The Foundation also reflects a lifetime of gratitude and service. Founder Nicklaus Suino began martial arts training as a young boy at the Ann Arbor YMCA and has spent nearly six decades studying, teaching, and sharing the arts he loves. His work helped shape what JMAC Ann Arbor is today.

Like many lifelong martial artists, he believes the deepest lessons of training go far beyond punches, throws, or techniques. Martial arts teach patience, humility, courage, respect, and care for others. The JMAC Foundation was created to help more people experience those gifts for years to come.

Giving Options

Supporting the Foundation is a way to give back to the arts that have given so much to so many people.

Supporters can choose to donate in honor of a teacher, a loved one, or a meaningful life event. Some supporters choose monthly or annual giving to help create stability for the future. Every contribution, large or small, becomes part of something lasting.

Together, we can help preserve traditions, support this community, and ensure that future generations can experience the same strength, wisdom, and human connection that martial arts have provided.
